EPA's policy will allow more viruses, parasites, toxic chemicals, and other pollutants into our waters by weakening the safeguards that have protected them for decades!

I am writing to ask you to protect the health and safety of our community's waters by co-sponsoring the Save Our Waters from Sewage Act (H.R. 1126).

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a policy that will allow sewage treatment plants to routinely dump inadequately treated sewage into lakes, rivers, streams, and coastal waters.

Sewage in our waters threatens public health, downstream businesses, and the environment by closing beaches, increasing the cost of drinking water filtration, damaging coral reefs, shutting down shellfish beds, and robbing the water of oxygen that fish need to live.

EPA's policy will allow more viruses, parasites, toxic chemicals, and other pollutants into waters by weakening longstanding Clean Water Act safeguards. Current Clean Water Act rules allow sewer operators to bypass treatment only if there is a heavy storm and full treatment is not feasible.  EPA's new policy would allow operators to bypass full treatment any time it rains, even when there are feasible alternatives.

The Save Our Waters from Sewage Act is bi-partisan legislation that will block EPA plans to authorize routine dumping of inadequately treated sewage and will require public notification if there are discharges of inadequately treated sewage.

Few Americans believe that the Clean Water Act should be weakened to allow more sewage in our waters.  We hope that you will co-sponsor the Save Our Waters from Sewage Act before EPA finalizes its sewage dumping policy.
